Petroleum-related Rock Mechanics

Rock mechanics plays a vital role in many oil industry problems such as wellbore instability, sand production, and stimulation. During the last three decades, the petroleum industry has realized the role rock mechanics in increasing the probability of success, hence in affecting the overall economics of developing a field. Rock mechanics is involved in drilling, perforating, stimulation, and production; i.e., almost in every stage starting from the conceptual design to the abandonment of a well. The role of rock mechanics is becoming increasingly important with operations in deep reservoirs.
